You know the garage has won when the car fits but the door doesn’t quite close. Ours reached that point the day the wheelie bins claimed the corner, and from there it’s a short slide to working on the driveway in the rain. Shelving is the fix, and it doesn’t need to be a big spend: a light steel or plastic unit runs around £25 to £50, while the heavy duty shelving that genuinely holds wheels and toolboxes costs more, price varies by the day. For most single garages we’d start with the VonHaus 5-tier, rated to 175kg per shelf and bolted to the wall. Here’s what to check before you hand over any money.

Why cheap shelving lets you down

The usual mistake is buying on the total weight rating. The number that matters is the rating per shelf, because that’s the figure your toolboxes and paint tins will push against. Look for steel units rated to at least 100kg per shelf, and treat 175kg and up as the heavy duty tier. Construction matters just as much: powder-coated steel frames with chipboard or steel shelves take garage life in their stride, while plastic units are fine for light loads but sag and crack under a stacked set of wheels or a toolbox full of sockets.

Measure the wall before you buy

Single garages are roughly 2.4 to 3 metres wide, so the end wall only takes one line of storage. A five-tier unit around a metre wide fits there nicely. Deeper shelves swallow toolboxes and storage crates, wider shelves hold wheels laid flat, so measure what you actually own before you pick. And go for shelves that clip up and down: the unit should fit your stuff as it grows, not force your stuff to fit the unit.

The fix-it-to-the-wall rule

Tall shelving must be fixed to the wall. It’s not a nice-to-have: a loaded unit that tips over in a garage where kids can reach is a genuine hazard. Check the unit ships with fixings, or budget for a pack of decent wall plugs and screws. While you’re at it, if you plan to actually work in there, a bench with a pegboard back panel rated around 200kg plus turns the wall into a tool board and keeps the work surface clear.

The budget route: light steel and plastic

If the garage just holds paint tins, seasonal bits and light boxes, a budget plastic or light steel unit from around £25 to £50 does the job (price varies, click to check). Just don’t expect it to hold wheels, toolboxes or anything you lean on. Browse garage shelving on Amazon UK.

What we’d do in a small garage

For a typical UK single garage we’d make the VonHaus 5-tier the storage backbone: 175kg per shelf swallows everything a car household accumulates, and the footprint suits the end wall. Add the workbench with pegboard when you want to start doing jobs in there, because a tool wall is what turns a storage space into a workshop. Fix every tall unit to the wall, and plan the whole room first with our home garage setup guide, then stock the bench with a proper socket set.
